Writing is not just about pouring out thoughts; it’s about shaping them with intention and skill. The balance of lyrical, imaginative phrasing with clear, direct communication invites readers into a world that feels both magical and accessible. One of the most valuable skills of writing is reading. However, writers also need to read critically.

Reading widely and critically allows writers to immerse themselves in diverse genres and styles, absorbing techniques and perspectives that enrich their own voice. This practice is a reminder that creativity thrives on connection - not just with our own ideas but with the broader literary landscape.

I homeschool, and part of my teaching involves reading what my students are reading. I primarily write for adults, though I read mostly children's literature. The consequence of reading books outside my genre is that it has taught me the skill of concise writing. While the previous sentence wasn't succinct, my critical examination of writing techniques has become more streamlined as I have read.

Reading children's literature has made me consider other elements of a story.

  • How do the illustrations and pictures connect? Why did the illustrator highlight that aspect of the story? How can I put illustrations within my novels?

  • Can I tell a story more concisely? What can I skip that the reader can fill in themselves? What did I gloss over when I was reading aloud? Do I need those elements in my own stories?

Genre-specific writing and reading are merely check boxes for marketing; all readers have read books outside their genre. A well-written story should transcend its designated genre. Your writing can be appreciated by more than just your target audience.

  • Practical advice: Keep a reading journal. Note what moves you, what puzzles you, and how different authors handle language and structure. Use these observations to experiment in your own writing.

  • Insightful practice: Design your own writing exercises from your reading observations. If you incorporate mindfulness in your journaling routine, you can master the writing techniques you have admired.

Creativity and personal development are intertwined. Your writing journey mirrors your inner evolution. As we grow as individuals, our creative work deepens and becomes more authentic. May your pen always find the words that sing.
